NBA Stars in the 2013 Playoffs Guaranteed to Be on a New Team Next Season
Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times reports that Milwaukee Bucks guard Monta Ellis plans to opt out of the final year of his deal this offseason.
The 27-year-old Ellis is set to make $11 million next year if he plays out his current contract, but it makes perfect sense for him to cut ties with the Bucks ASAP, especially given the tenuous situation between the team and point guard Brandon Jennings. Milwaukee can afford to sign both players to long-term deals, and the smart money says that Ellis would be the odd man out once the smoke clears next summer.
Despite shooting less than 42 percent from the field this season, Ellis is still one of the league's better scorers (19.2 PPG—11th in the league), so he should have little trouble finding a place to land once he officially cuts ties with the Bucks.

NHL Trade Deadline: Should It Be Later in the Season?
The NHL trade deadline has come and gone, and while there were a couple of big names moved on Wednesday, namely Marian Gaborik (h/t TSN's Darren Dreger) and Jason Pominville (h/t the Associated Press, USA Today), it was a slow day on the trade front.
Bigger names had been moved earlier with Jarome Iginla and Jaromir Jagr being the headliners, but with only four or five teams eliminated from playoff contention, there were not many sellers across the league.
In a full season, instead of the end of February, I think the league should move the date to the first or second week of March.
With more teams out of contention, there would be more sellers in play, and prices on players would likely be lowered.
Therefore, teams in contention would make even more deals, and teams in a rebuilding mode would be even more motivated to move players.
With the current dates, very few teams are decidedly out of the race, but this would be rectified by changing the deadline date.
Unrestricted free agents would be even more in play, particularly if the selling team had no plans to re-sign the player.
Teams in need of shedding veteran players and salary for the next season would benefit as well, as players with one year remaining on their deals would be more attractive to their new teams with the lowered total cost.
I understand that all professional sports leagues love parity, but from the fans' perspective something has been lost with fewer opportunities for dynasties to emerge.
While teams could not build their team around the trade deadline, they could more readily add two or three key pieces that would make them that much stronger down the stretch drive and into the playoffs.
Upsets are great, and I don't think they would necessarily go away, but having seven or eight teams really separating from the pack would make for some terrific series, particularly in the conference finals and the Stanley Cup Final.
Loaded teams facing off in the playoffs, the time of year that really matters, would also help to further existing rivalries and help create new ones.
For these key reasons, it makes a lot of sense for the NHL to move the trade deadline to a later date in the season.

It's not that they lack talent, but the last few seasons have subdued their skills and belief, playing next to such a footballing phenom. One of the things Vilanova will have to address, and soon, is where do Barca go from here, because while Messi is close to unstoppable most of the time, the rest of Barcelona isn't. The 49ers know a thing or two about drafting running backs with severely damaged knee ligaments. They picked one up in the third round back in 2005, in the hopes that, should he recover, they'd be getting a real bargain. His name was Frank Gore.
With ample depth at the position and an already solid roster, top to bottom, the San Francisco 49ers took a chance on the über-talented, über-injured Marcus Lattimore. Sound familiar? Lattimore can owe this leap of faith by the Niners in large part to Gore, who stands as a stark reminder that RBs can recover from so-called career ending injuries sustained during college, and even flourish. In fact, the two backs have been close for a while. Lattimore wears Gore's number (21.) And Gore even called Lattimore after suffering that fateful second knee injury:
SFGate: "He told me to keep my positive attitude," Lattimore said. "I doubted myself, I did do that and I lost hope. But now it's just a great, great situation to be in."

Maybe it's just to help someone else in the future that's going to go through the same exact thing. Somebody is going to tear his ACL in his sophomore year. He's going to be a great player. Then, he's going to tear it his junior year. Then, he's going to look it up. And he's going to find some motivation in my story.
Sounds like an awesome story in the making. If he does end up getting back on track, he might end up taking Gore's job from him. How's that for ironic? But that's still a long shot. Just watch the injury below and you'll understand why his resurgence has been so improbable.

Holden's TV interview part two: the loan & the comeback
Yesterday, we shared the first part of Stu Holden's interview with Fox Soccer Channel in which he detailed the Jonny Evans injury and the struggles that he faced in the recovery process. Stuart's girlfriend, Karalyn West, and brother, Euan, were also on hand to share what it was like from the sidelines. We encourage you to go back and watch (or read) the interview if you have the time.
Earlier today, Fox Soccer Channel published the second part and conclusion of the interview. The four-minute-long segment was, on the whole, much brighter than the first part as the Holden brothers and Karalyn discussed Stu's comeback and the midfielder's future.
"I said to him, even if I had a game on the same day as his first game back that I would fake sickness just to go and watch him play just because I know how much he'd been through." That is what Euan Holden told his brother as the long bid for a full fitness return went on for Stu.
"I think it's gone better than I'd expected to be honest. I felt fitter every game, I felt stronger, I felt sharper and every time that you step on the field, you're feeling more confident, in more of a rhythm and things start to come back to you," Stu said, describing his comeback.
" You get on the ball and you stop worrying then about your knee. It's more about how you're playing and that's why I think it's been a major success."
When asked about how the loan to Sheffield Wednesday transpired, Holden replied: "I had a number of talks with the manager and we both kind of decided that it would be best for me to get game time.
"It didn't cost Sheffield Wednesday any money for them to take me on board so in that sense, it was kind of a win-win for everyone around. I'd go out and get games and get fitter and get stronger and then be able to come back to Bolton and play a more vital part in the team.
"My first game I was thrown in a local derby against Barnsley in front of 30,000 fans and I played in the Yorkshire Derby against Leeds in front of 25-26,000. All of these games mean so much because they're in a relegation battle, essentially. I don't think I'd have it any other way."
When asked how far Stu can go, Euan responded: "I get asked this question a bit and my honest response is I think he'll be back better than he was before.
"Now that he's playing, the best sign for me was after his first game was he said 'I'm exhausted. I didn't think about my knee once the whole game, I was knackered. I was breathing hard and in the game.' The fact that he hadn't thought about his knee or that he felt his knee was sore, that he felt his knee, was the best sign for me."
Stu went on to discuss his contact with Jurgen Klinsmann and the potential of a US Men's National Team return, a subject we covered in length here. When all was said and done, Stu Holden sounded extremely upbeat and hopeful of playing a large part in Bolton's play-off push.

The Arsenal manager believes United would have won their 20th league title last year, had Queens Park Rangers not succumbed to the "relief" of knowing they would not be relegated to concede two late goals against Manchester City.
Wenger will endure Van Persie's return to the Emirates Stadium, having reluctantly sold him for £24million last summer. The striker, along with the rest of the United side, will be afforded a guard of honour by his former team-mates.

"First of all what we have managed during this period – we have not finished 12th or 16th in one season," Wenger said.

Roberto Mancini's squad dominated from the opening kickoff, applying tons of pressure and coming away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Etihad Stadium. The score hardly reflects how impressive City was in front of their home supporters, however.
Finally, nearly a half hour into the match, Sergio Aguero finished off a sensational play by City, putting the home team ahead 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Blues would create more scoring chances in the second half, and Yaya Toure would ultimately leave no doubt as he blasted one into the net, doubling his side's lead in the 83rd minute.
On the other end, West Ham was able to score a cheap one late, when Joe Hart made a mess of Andy Carroll's shot. Overall, though, the Hammers were unable to break through, and their bid to at least force a draw at Etihad fell short.
While West Ham manager Sam Allardyce certainly can't be too surprised by the result, he'll definitely be disappointed with the effort displayed from his side on Saturday.
The win means that City will remain comfortably ahead of third place in the league table with four matches left to play. Meanwhile, the defeat marks the first in over a month for West Ham.
City striker Sergio Aguero was one of the most aggressive players on the pitch all day long, and it paid off for him as he put home the match's first goal.
Andy Carroll had his chances for West Ham, but he failed to capitalize behind enemy lines when it mattered most. His 19th-minute booking certainly didn't help his match grade.
Carlos Tevez was very active on Saturday, creating chances early and often. He was unlucky not to come away with a goal, but he'll certainly be content to pocket three more points for City in the EPL table.
No, West Ham goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen didn't record a clean sheet on Saturday. But had anyone else been between the sticks for the Hammers, City may have registered two or three more goals.
While the result reflects poorly on Jaaskelainen, he did well to keep the bleeding to a minimum. He recorded six big saves on Saturday, adding to his league-leading total.

Everything You Need to Know About NBC’s Coverage of the Premier League
In the past several weeks, many of the readers to EPL Talk have posted many detailed questions about all of the ins- and -outs of NBC's coverage plans for the Premier League, which will begin on August 17, 2013 when the new Premier League season begins.
I've answered all of your questions below (plus many more). If you still have questions remaining, please post them in the comments section below and I'll do my best to answer them for you.
A: When available, the lead commentator will be Arlo White with either Graeme Le Saux or Lee Dixon as co-commentators. Arlo White will commentate approximately three Premier League matches per weekend.
A: Whenever there's a game featuring NBC commentators, the team will be commentating live from the stadium in England or Wales. As such, Arlo White is moving from the United States to the United Kingdom.
A: When NBC's commentators aren't available or are doing another game at the same time, NBC Sports will provide the world feed with British announcers (from TWI/IMG).
A: Arlo White is a career professional who has worked at the BBC before moving to the States where he commentated games for Seattle Sounders and Major League Soccer. During the summer of 2012, Arlo White was the lead commentator for the soccer matches at the Olympics, which were televised on NBC to the U.S. audience.
A: Experienced professional Rebecca Lowe will be moving from her job with ESPN UK to join NBC Sports, where she'll be the presenter of the Premier League to a US audience. Lowe has worked at the BBC, Setanta Sports and ESPN — both in the US and UK. She'll be joined by studio analysts Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe.
A: Gary Lineker will be a special contributor and on-site host. Due to his hectic schedule as presenter on BBC's Match Of The Day, we'll typically see Lineker make appearances now and again on NBC Sports on Sundays.
A: All 380 games will be presented live on television. Roughly six of the matches will be shown live on NBC Sports Network and NBC each weekend, while the remaining four will be made available to participating TV providers via Premier League Extra Time. All games will be streamed live for web, mobile and tablet users on the NBC Sports Live Extra service, as long as your TV provider has an agreement in place to provide the service to you.
A: On Saturdays, NBC Sports Network will show the 7:45am ET game, followed by a 10am ET game on the same network. The 12:30pm ET game on Saturday will be shown on NBC (20 games per season; the others will be shown on NBC Sports Network). On Sundays, the early kick-off at 8:30am ET will be shown on NBC Sports Network. The 11am ET game will be shown on NBC Sports Network and Telemundo. The Monday game at 3pm ET will be shown live on NBC Sports Network.
Q: Will Premier League games be televised on English-speaking networks in the United States other than NBC and NBC Sports Network?
A: Some of the games may be shown on USA or CNBC, for example, on the final day of the season where NBC Universal will use 10 of its different channels to show live matches.
Q: Can we expect no issues with games being blocked by local NBC affiliates (like FOX had with their games not being shown on some local FOX affiliate networks due to other programming commitments)?
A: NBC Sports will re-air the best match of the week on Sunday nights. There may be other re-air possibilities but, as of press time, we're waiting on clarification.
A: Before and after every Premier League match, there'll be a pre-match and post-match show featuring news and analysis. But outside of the games themselves, NBC Sports will be providing 600+ hours of original programming each season.
Match of the Day — Modeled on the BBC show of the same name, this two-hour highlights show will be shown every Saturday. The show will re-air on Sunday mornings.
Match of the Day 2 — Modeled on the BBC show of the same name, this 90-minute show will feature highlights from Sunday's matches.
Premier League Download — The show will feature celebrity supporters, comedians and journalists who will discuss what they love and loathe about the league.
Premier League 36 — NBC Sports Network's 36 Series will follow footballers for the 36 hours leading up to a match in a unique behind-the-scenes documentary.
Premier League Goal Zone — A 30-minute program airing after matches on Sunday with highlights of all the goals scored on Saturday and Sunday.
Game Cut-Downs — On Monday nights, NBC Sports Network will present a two-hour show featuring shorter versions of the Man United and Manchester City games. On Tuesdays, a two-hour show will feature highlights from Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham matches.
A: All games not aired on a designated NBCUniversal channel will be made available to distributors on Premier League Extra Time, a package of overflow television channels available at no extra cost for each of their customers who receives NBC Sports Network.
Q: What do I need to do if my TV provider isn't going to offer Premier League Extra Time and/or NBC Sports Live Extra?
A: Contact them via phone, social media or by e-mail and politely let them know that you want access to both Premier League Extra Time and NBC Sports Live Extra well before the new season starts on August 17, 2013. If they aren't willing to give you what you want, or they're non-responsive, it may be time to consider moving to a TV provider who will give you access to 100% of the live Premier League games.
A: NBC Sports Live Extra is a live streaming product from NBC Sports for desktop, mobile, tablets and, in most cases, on the digital platforms of participating cable, satellite, telco and other video subscription services.
A: Every Premier League match will be streamed live via NBC Sports Live Extra. The service is available on an authenticated basis to subscribers. As of press time, the four TV providers offering its customers this service are Comcast xFinity TV, Verizon FIOS, Suddenlink and Cablevision. If your TV provider isn't one of those, you'll need to contact them to say that you want NBC Sports Live Extra and Premier League Extra Time, so you don't miss access to a single game.
A: As long as you're a subscriber to NBC Sports Network and your TV provider has an agreement in place with NBC Sports to offer NBC Sports Live Extra, there is no extra cost to get NBC Sports Live Extra.
Q: Will users be able to watch multiple EPL games at the same time on one device via NBC Sports Live Extra, in a mosaic format?
A: EPL Talk understands that with NBC Sports Live Extra, you'll have a wealth of information at your fingertips including access to a second screen experience complete with plenty of data and statistics. On the web, iPad, iPhone and Android, you'll be able to access statistics for each match. Plus, you'll be able to pull up 'Player Cards' for each player, to review more details about the footballer such as which country they're from, what clubs they played at previously, etc. NBC Sports Live Extra will also include DVR functionality so if you're joining the game late, you can rewind to miss any of the action. Plus, you'll be able to access highlights from the game as the game is being played. All of the details are subject to change.
